Developing grit in ourselves and our children is a harbinger of success. I read a recent article discussing the importance of grit for our children. It defined grit as 5 character traits. Courage: I can’t think of a better way to teach courage than through public speaking and performance auditions. Thank you dance and musical theater! Conscientiousness: I work on this daily. “Kids, just because it’s an accident doesn’t mean you don’t owe her an apology. Lack of conscientiousness is a fault.” Perseverance: dance and performance teaches this in spades. Practice and training are absolutely critical to success. Resilience: you’ll fail. You may only win 1/100 auditions. Failure abounds. You must not let it shatter your confidence or willingness to try again. And finally passion: if you don’t have it, all of the above are meaningless. Find it and hold on for dear life. I’ve found mine. “Grit,” is a 36”x60” acrylic and pumice mixed media painting on canvas.
